“Ikigai” by Héctor García, Francesc Miralles

I am not a fan of self help books and such books often tire me. Recently, I purchased few books and as a filler I purchased Ikigai because of the praise I’d read about it and particularly for it’s amazing cover picture.

I’ve mixed reactions for this book.

Firstly, As a self help book, this book doesn’t do a great job it’s repeats all over again what every self help book has been doing from the past few decades now.

Secondly, this book introduces us to the concept of Ikigai — the Japanese secret to living a long and happy life. While, it’s the basic selling point of this book but sadly Ikigai hasn’t been discussed in detail.

Thirdly, all the concepts of happy living including few concepts of Ikigai are easily available on the internet. A lot of YouTube videos are available which talk in much detail about Ikigai.

However, the good thing about this book and I must agree was actually great is the profiling of people of Japan. Why they live long and happy lives. It talks about the food people have in Japan (and believe me I was drooling over the descriptions). The landscape of Land Of Longevity was remarkable.

There are certain concepts in this book which are new like focusing on health rather being mechanical. Introducing Yoga and equivalent exercises to calm the nerves.

If you are planning on reading this book as a self help book, I’d suggest to go with its eBook. Or if you are into book aesthetics — this book has a great cover and it looks amazing. A cute little happy book on your book shelf would look amazing.
